Wong Tai Sin is a Taoist God who achieved fame using the miraculous properties of Chinese herbal prescriptions in aiding the needy and healing the sick. He has gained respect by preaching benevolence and practicing virtues, while possessing the power to control "get what you pray for". Therefore, he is very popular among peasant worshippers.
Legend says that Wong Tai Sin was originally named Wong Cho Ping. He was born in A.D. 328 and was a shepherd boy living in the Red Pine Hill, north of Jinhua in Zhejiang Province. When he was 15, he was taught by an immortal art of refining cinnabar into a medicine that was said to cure all illnesses. He spent the next 40 years living in seclusion until he was found by his brother.
In 1899 the original Wong Tai Sin was built in Fangcun. It was frequently visited by residents of Guangzhou and Guangdong Province to pay their respects to the Taoist God. Although the building was later destroyed, the artifacts of the stone plaques, stone pillars and delicate handcarvings, recall the impressive design of the architect.
A follower of Wong Tai Sin migrated to Hong Kong and rebuilt the Temple on the southern slope of the Lion Rock in 1921. Since then the Temple in Hong Kong has been crowded with local and overseas' worshippers all year round.
Reconstruction of the Wong Tai Sin Project in the original site in Guangzhou was supported by the Provincial, Municipal and District Governments as well as the local and overseas’ Chinese communities. Canada Land Limited financed the whole Project. After two years of planning and design, the ground-breaking took place on November 9, 1997. Phase I of the Project was finally completed and opened to public on February 6, 1999 with 130,000 visitors. Phase II was also finished in December 2004.
